Meet Heidi Humphries, the Business Entrepreneur Behind Zen Elite Equestrian Center

“Returning to horses feels like coming home, but with a wealth of experience and perspective that I gained through my career in healthcare,” Humphries said.

As a young girl, Heidi Humphries had a deep love for babies and horses. She has gone on to work closely with both throughout her professional life. Humphries is the founder of Zen Elite Equestrian Center near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and owns several high-profile horses including Helix, who was ridden by Adrienne Lyle in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Humphries’ career didn’t start in the stables. With a passion for children, Humphries initially pursued a very different career as a Neonatal Registered Nurse. “Caring for newborns and their families was both deeply rewarding and profoundly challenging and allowed me to make a meaningful impact during their most vulnerable moments,” she said.

As a new mom herself, Humphries recognized the need for high-quality, reliable breast pumps that could truly support mothers on their breastfeeding journey. This inspired the launch of her own company, Spectra Baby USA, with the mission to provide innovative, hospital-strength breast pumps that are both comfortable and effective.

“As a CEO, I've been committed to ensuring that our products are designed with the needs of both moms and babies in mind,” Humphries said. “Seeing the positive impact our products have on families continues to drive me in this journey.”

Humphries described her experience with Spectra Baby USA as “transformative.” It taught her the ups and downs of business, as well as the importance of staying true to her values.

Having started riding at seven years old, it was always Humphries’ dream to own an equestrian facility. “My Appaloosa mare, Roxie, was my first horse, and she was truly special. She raised me, in a way, and she played a pivotal role in my life, guiding me through the challenges of growing up,” she recalled. “Riding and caring for Roxie taught me patience, responsibility, and the importance of communication without words. She wasn’t just a horse to me; she was a partner and teacher.”

Humphries’ lifelong love of horses, the business experience she gained with Spectra Baby USA, and the “deep understanding of what it means to create something meaningful from the ground up” led to the launch of Zen Elite Equestrian Center. She said that having “learned how to listen closely to what people need” has been crucial in the growth of Zen Elite.

“Everyone is an individual, from the horses to the riders, trainers, and grooms. I believe it is essential to nurture the growth of both horses and people in a way that honors their unique paths,” Humphries said. “This new venture is not just about building another business — it's about creating a brand that aligns with my personal growth and vision.”

For Humphries, it has been a natural progression to go from healthcare back to horses. “Returning to horses feels like coming home, but with a wealth of experience and perspective that I gained through my career in healthcare,” she said. She describes Zen Elite as a state-of-the-art horse boarding, training, and breeding facility, where “horses enjoy spacious concrete stalls, extensive turnout areas, and access to both covered and open arenas.” The facility includes a fully equipped horse gym, featuring an Aquatread, treadmill, cold water spa, and a VibraPlate with solarium.

Meanwhile, riders and families can enjoy the lounge, which has a cascading fountain and cloud couches. “We designed Zen Elite not just for efficient training and peak performance, but also as a tranquil haven where riders can relax and rejuvenate,” Humphries added. “We believe when both horses and riders are content, they are empowered to reach their fullest potential. Zen Elite is named with the intention that everyone who steps through our gates will leave the chaos of the outside world behind.”

As part of her pledge to give back, seven years ago Humphries founded Zen Haven, with her partner Danielle Linder, which is a nonprofit animal sanctuary for ducks, pigs, donkeys, cats and other animals in need. “Our mission is to provide a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment for these rescued animals,” Humphries explained. “Saving animals is a true passion project for both of us, and we are proud to care for hundreds of animals at our private sanctuary.”

With such an impressive resume, it is difficult to imagine adding more, but in 2024, Humphries can now add “Olympic horse owner” to her resume following Helix competing in the 2024 Paris

Olympic Games on the U.S. Olympic dressage team with Lyle. Humphries was at the Palace of Versailles equestrian venue and said that the “pride and joy of seeing a horse and rider you’ve invested so much time and care into competing at the highest level is indescribable. It’s not just about winning; it’s about the journey, the teamwork, and the fulfillment of a shared dream ... it is a feeling I’ll always treasure and will never forget.” Zen Elite also owns Bohemian, who is ridden by Team USA traveling reserve Endel Ots.

Humphries described being at the 2024 Olympics as “overwhelmingly unbelievable” as she cheered on Zen Elite’s horses and riders. “Being an owner at the Paris Olympic Games was an extraordinary experience. The venue was stunning, and the camaraderie within Team USA among the riders and support staff was truly remarkable,” she said. “One of the most emotional and unforgettable moments for me was walking behind Adrienne and Helix as they approached the magnificent Olympic arena, with my partner, Danielle, by my side and my family in the stadium.

“Owning horses for Adrienne and Endel was a natural choice for me. Adrienne's undeniable talent is complemented by her extraordinary focus and gentle, kind approach to horses,” Humphries continued. “We definitely share that deep unspoken love for horses that only another ‘horse girl’ can truly understand.”

As for Ots, Humphries explained that “with Endel, it all started when I bought a Lusitano horse (Zill) with hopes of riding in dressage. Unfortunately, my neck had other plans but that is how we met,” she said, referring to a neck injury that prevents her from riding anymore. “When my riding plan didn't pan out, I wanted to continue to stay involved in dressage, so I bought a young horse for Endel to train and ride.” That horse was King's Pleasure, he is now riding Zen Elite’s second horse to be partnered with him, Bohemian.

“When he tried Bohemian, it was love at first ride. He wanted to show the world what he could do, and I really wanted to give him that opportunity.”

Humphries said that Helix and Bohemian are both one-in-a-million horses. “We affectionally call Helix our ‘Barbie’ horse,” she laughed. “He is not just talented but also wants to please Adrienne in every way.” As for Bohemian, “he has a heart of gold and is truly one of the most incredible souls I have ever met.”

The future holds endless opportunities for Zen Elite and Humphries, who always wants to “prioritize the well-being of the horses” above anything. “I am fortunate to have a team of talented riders supported by expert coaches and teams, and I trust them to set ambitious goals. Our role is to provide unwavering support as they continue to dream big, and care for our horses with the same love and dedication that we do.”

Along with Lyle and Ots, Zen Elite currently sponsors jumping trainer, Jill Briggs, and dressage trainers Christian Simonson and Quinn Iverson. They also sponsor Kati Dagge on her own horses.

Despite being a business owner and a mom to two children, Bryan and Nicole, Humphries still finds time to spend with her personal horses and minis, Zill, Rambo, Phantom and Bowtie. “My favorite time of the day is in the evening when I prepare their daily meals and spend quality time with them,” she said.
