Florida Veterinarian Takes AAEP Presidential Reins

by By Sally Baker | Jan 5, 2006, 9:28 AM

Thomas D. Brokken, DVM, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, was installed as the 52nd president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) during the group’s annual convention in Seattle, WA, December 3-7. He will serve through 2006.

Dr. Brokken has devoted his veterinary career to the care of the
Thoroughbred. He is the senior partner of Teigland, Franklin & Brokken, DVMs, P.A., a 12-veterinarian equine medicine and surgery practice dedicated exclusively to Thoroughbred racehorses. Dr. Brokken began working at the practice in 1970 following the completion of an internship in equine medicine and surgery at the University of Saskatchewan.

An active member of the AAEP, Dr. Brokken has served on numerous committees and task forces since first joining the association in 1969. His volunteer service includes terms on the Biologic and Therapeutic Agents, Racing, Emergency Care, Ethics, Educational Programs and Nominating committees. He
also works with the media and racing public as a veterinary spokesperson for the AAEP’s On Call program. In addition, Dr. Brokken is a frequent contributor to the AAEP’s annual convention as a panel participant and table topics facilitator. He previously served on the AAEP board of directors from 1985-1990.

Dr. Brokken’s involvement in veterinary medicine extends to his work with the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium and his role on the Florida Veterinary Medical Association’s Advisory Committee to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a former member of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation’s Research Advisory Committee.

A native of Harmony, MN, Dr. Brokken attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and received his veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota in 1969. He and his wife, Sally, have two sons, Todd and Matt, who are following in his footsteps as equine veterinarians.
