Auburn Takes Down No.1 Baylor in Thriller

Is it the Tiger’s turn to be No.1 yet? If they do top the next NCEA rankings, they’ll have the fortune of never needing to ride against themselves. For two consecutive weeks now the No.1 ranked team in the country has been defeated by the reigning NCEA Champions. Last week they upset Georgia at home. On Friday, coach Greg Williams’ squad earned an exciting win on the road in Waco, Texas, a win that was decided by the very last ride.

Both teams are traditional hunter seat powerhouses and Auburn won that battle Friday taking Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat 3-2. Christina Lin and Demi Stiegler earned points in both events for the Tigers with Steigler earning the over Fences MOP. She scored a competition high 96 on horse Caleb. Sam Schaefer and Paige Parker earned wins in both events to account for all four Bears hunter seat points. The deciding points for the Tigers were scored by Megan Bifano on the Flat and Elizabeth Benson over Fences.

Baylor dominated Horsemanship 3-1. Parris Rice, Gillian Chant, and Shelby Jackson scored points for the Bears and Lucy Igoe the lone point for the Tigers. That tied up the score at 7-7 and led to a showdown in Reining.

Katie Berg took the first point to give Baylor the lead, but then Griffin Kinght and Cheyenne Cracraft earned back to back points giving the Tigers a 9-8 lead and two chances to secure the win. Claire Jackson denied them with her MOP performance on Dinero…and the day came down to Shelby Jackson and Hailey Munger.

Brownie was the horse and Jackson rode first. She set the mark at 66.5. It was close, but Munger earned 67 and a razor thin victory for the Tigers.
"It was an incredible win," said coach Williams. "The girls stayed in it all the way until the end. We had great performances on the hunt seat side in both events, and clutch rides from reiners to close out the win.”

Baylor now waits till February to compete again when they’ll be in action at home against Delaware State.
