The Gold Medal luncheon was held on February 5 in honor of the 2004 United States Olympic Gold Medal Team. Hosted by Harold and Kathy Kamine, the event brought together many of the incredible people that made Athens happen and those who continue to support equine sports.
The Kamines arranged the party to unite the countless participants that were needed to make it to the Olympics. “Not all of us could be in Athens, so I thought, ‘What a great opportunity to have everyone together to watch the much deserved presentation’,” said Kamine. “I wanted to have the owners, sponsors, riders, vets, grooms, the United States Equestrian Federation and everyone that works behind the scenes acknowledged for their efforts. They all have become like family. These are the supporters that work day in and day out to make this dream a reality,” she emphasized.
All 2004 Show Jumping Team Gold medalists were present. The team consisted of McLain Ward, Beezie Madden, Peter Wylde and Chris Kappler. Alison Firestone, the 2004 Team alternate, also was there. “This was so nice of the Kamines, and I am so happy for the team,” stated Firestone. Beezie
Madden was appreciative of the Kamines’ acknowledgement and was looking forward to seeing the medal around her neck. The team has known for the last year they would be receiving the Gold, but they had not seen the medals yet.
“It was a nice ending and brought some closure to me after a long drawn-out process,” said Kappler, referring to the change in medals. “It was such a pleasure to work with the highest caliber of professionals. The riders were incredible and are not only my team members, but my very good friends. I have some great memories that I will never forget.”
The luncheon was also held to honor Kappler’s Olympic horse, Royal Kaliber. Roy, as he was affectionately called, tragically passed away shortly after the Olympics. The Kamines presented the United States Equestrian Federation with a painting of Kappler and Royal Kaliber, painted by acclaimed equestrian artist Jan Lukens.
Champagne glasses were raised as Kathy Kamine spoke of the gratitude in her heart for all the thoughts and prayers spoken for her family during that tragic time around Roy’s death. She spoke of the joy that Roy brought into their lives and how the horse had brought both the Kamine and the Kappler families closer than ever, united in one dream. Kamine remembered how the horse used to float over fences, a picture of grace, heart and unsurpassed athleticism, guided by Kappler’s talent and skill. Roy and Chris had an outstanding partnership that is bonded forever in each other’s souls.
Portraits were also donated to Royal Kaliber’s groom Louis Hernandez, the 2004 Chef d’ Equipe Frank Chapot, and their veterinarian, Dr. Tim Ober.
David O’Connor, President of the USEF, accepted the gift on behalf of the United States Equestrian Federation. O’Connor was a presenter of the Gold medals during the ceremony. He was very appreciative of the Kamines’ decision to host the luncheon. To recognize such an achievement publicly is a once in a lifetime chance. “I am proud to be part of it,” said O’Connor. John Long, CEO of the United States Federation, who also presented in the ceremony, stated his appreciation for their hospitality and said it had been a long time coming.
Guests continued with cuisine served by A Gourmet Affair and happily watched from their flower-laden tables as the medals were bestowed around the athletes’ necks. The team gave a special salute as they galloped by the pavilion, while their most loyal supporters cheered them on and their new Gold medals blew in the breeze.
