South Dakota State Makes Surprise Run to NCEA Independent Championship Title

- Tied at 6-6 with UT-Martin going into the final event of the day, the South Dakota State reining riders swept all four points to lock up the 10-6 win and the 2014 Independent Championship title.

“I was excited to see our student-athletes go into the ring with such confidence this weekend and have such strong performances in every event,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “Mentally, they are in a great place, and this tournament was an important win at the end of a tough season.”

The Jackrabbits, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, improve to 3-9 in the season with the win, while the Skyhawks, the No. 2 seed in the event, fall to 6-9.

SDSU captured three of the four MOP awards on the weekend as well, with Santana Wright winning over fences, Lexus Hoffman in horsemanship and Laura Dunlavy in reining.

Wright, along with Blair Julia Wright both scored points on Saturday on the flat. Santana evened her record at 5-5 on the flat, while Blair Julia moves to 6-3-1 on the season.

Santana also scored a point over fences to improve to 7-5 in that event, while Marielle Golden moved to 2-1 over fences.

Victoria Johnson completed a perfect weekend in horsemanship to improve to 7-4, with Elizabeth Niewojna winning on Saturday to improve to 8-3 in her freshman season.

Danielle Baker moved to 5-5 in reining with a win on Saturday, while Dunlavy improves to 5-5-1, Caroline Lesousky 4-6 and NCEA All-American Raivenne Scott boosted her record to 10-0-1.

Fresno State downed Delaware State 14-1 in the consolation bracket to win third place.
