AMHA to Develop Home-School Program

by American Morgan Horse Association | Jul 15, 2014, 4:57 PM

Through a grant from the USA Equestrian Trust, AMHA is seeking to develop an online homeschool program to teach reading, writing, history, science, and math through the use of horsemanship and the Morgan horse.

Homeschooling is a type of education where children learn outside of a school setting under the supervision of their parents. The family determines what is to be learned and how it is to be taught, while following whatever government regulations apply in that state or country.

Today homeschooling is a widely accepted educational alternative to traditional public or private schools, as well as a valuable method of learning in its own right. It's believed that between 1 to 2 percent of all school-age children are homeschooled; roughly 1.4 million were believed to be homeschooled last year.

AMHA has several areas that could be incorporated in a homeschool curriculum, including its Youth Horsemastership Program, which is comprised of five successive levels that test a student's knowledge of the Morgan breed and general horsemanship.

If you have knowledge and/or interest in this topic and would like to participate in a focus group to help develop this content, please email AMHA Executive Director Julie Broadway at [email protected] by July 28.
