- A tough cross country course at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials at Burghley House, Stamford in Lincolnshire, England yielded no finishes under optimum time Saturday and led to a shuffling at the top of the leaderboard. Four U.S. horses and riders set out onto the course. Three of them are in the top 25 heading into the jumping phase of competition on Sunday.

Hannah Sue Burnett (The Plains Va.) and Jacqueline Mars’ Harbour Pilot moved up seven places after a clear round over the cross country fences with only 13.2 time penalties. The Karen E. Stives High Performance Eventing Grant Recipient and 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse Gelding now have a total score of 61.7 and are in seventh place.

Burnett’s fellow American, and fellow Karen E. Stives High Performance Event Grant Recipient Marilyn Little (Frederick, Md.), was assessed a 21 point penalty for breaking a frangible pin on part of the “Malting’s Corner” obstacle with Team Demeter, LLC’s 12-year-old Oldenburg mare RF Demeter. The pair was otherwise clear over the fences with 28.4 time penalties. Their total score is now 96.9 and they are in 22nd place.

Also completing the cross country course were Allison Springer (Upperville, Va.) and the Arthur Syndicate, LLC’s 15-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, Arthur. They took 20 penalties for a run-out at fence 19b and 28.4 time penalties. They are now in 20th place on a total score of 89.6.

Meghan O’Donoghue & her own 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Pirate, competing with the help of a USEF Land Rover Competition Grant, also set out on the Burghley cross country course Saturday but were eliminated after a fall. Neither rider nor horse was injured.

New Zealand’s Andrew Nicholson leads on a total score of 46.1 with Avebury. Sam Griffiths and Happy Times from Australia are in second with a 49.8 score.[U1]  Oliver Townend from Great Britain is third with Armada in third on 55.1.
