by By Joyce Hamblin | Sep 2, 2004, 12:00 PM

The Colorado Horse Park hosted the National Combined Driving Singles Championship on August 27-29, in Parker, CO. Day one, which offered the dressage phase, was overcast through all the preliminary and intermediate level tests. The weather continued to worsen, and with the entrance into the ring of the first advanced driver, torrential rains began and continued through the conclusion of the day’s competition. Despite the weather, accuracy and skill were nonetheless demonstrated by the drivers, and Ryan Weatherford, of Texas and the Friesian/Holsteiner cross, Beau, were victorious. He drove the Friesian/Holsteiner cross, Beau. Drew Callahan, of Texas, was second with Export, a Morgan. Spirits remained high, in spite of the weather.

The second day of the competition dawned sunny and cool and remained so throughout the rest of the event. The weather was perfect for the Marathon. Callahan and Export met the challenges of the course and were in first place at the end of the day. Eileen Davis, of Arizona, came in second with her Morgan, Daniel Dawson.

The final challenge, on day three, was the Cones Course. Weatherford won this phase of the competition. Callahan’s strong score in the Marathon, however, combined with his scores in Dressage and Cones confirmed him as overall winner and champion. Eileen Davis was reserve champion with the second highest overall score.
