Fresno State Claims UEC Championship

The Fresno State equestrian team defeated Southern Methodist University on Saturday, 12-4, becoming the United Equestrian Conference champions.

The No. 1-seeded Fresno State Bulldogs defeated the No. 2-seeded Mustangs, 12-4.

In the hunt seat category, the teams tied, 4-4.

"They were a really extremely tough competition," assistant coach Kimberly HewsonBudnik said. "They came out here, and we had to put in our best rides in order to beat them.."

SMU had the upper hand in equitation over fences, outscoring the `Dogs, 3-1. Freshman Sierra Swaffar earned the only point, defeating her opponent, 154-135.

Fresno State came back in equitation on the flat, defeating SMU, 3-1. Senior Randi Pomrehn earned a point with her score of 154 over her opponent's 140. Senior Kara Spicer defeated her opponent, 152-145. Swaffar earned another point, defeating the Mustang, 152-139.

The `Dogs went undefeated in the western category, overwhelming the Mustangs, 8-0. In horsemanship, senior Kirsten McKillop defeated her opponent, 147-145.5. Freshman Rachel Williams took a point, 149-146. Sophomore Taylor Brown defeated her opponent, 148-0, earning the Most Outstanding Player award for the event. Lastly, freshman Taylor Dixon defeated her opponent, 144.5-139.

In reining, senior Ciara Kozlowski earned a point with her score of 140 over her opponent's 137. Senior Brigid O'Leary defeated her opponent, 137.5-121.5. Brown defeated her opponent, 137-135.5. McKillop also took another point, defeating her opponent, 141-136. She earned the Most Outstanding Player award for this event. Both Brown and McKillop went undefeated over both days throughout all four tournament events.

With the win, the `Dogs were crowned United Equestrian Conference champions. Athletic Director Jim Bartko and Associate Athletic Director John Kriebs presented the awards.

"We are so excited and proud to be number one in our United Equestrian Conference," HewsonBudnik said.

SMU took second place. New Mexico State University defeated South Dakota State University, 9-6, earning the third place spot.

United Equestrian Conference Rider of the Year awards were also announced. Williams was awarded United Equestrian Conference horsemanship rider of the year.

The nine senior Bulldogs were also honored for all their hard work and dedication in a ceremony midway through the competition for Senior Day.

The `Dogs now head to the National Collegiate Equestrian Association national championship ranked at No. 5. Nationals will be held in Waco, Texas on April 16-18.

"We are so excited for nationals," HewsonBudnik said. "We are going to continue to build on what we are doing--riding mistake-free and just stepping everything up and pushing the limits. We are ready to go!"
