Thousands of Dollars in Savings Available to USEF Members Through John Deere

by By Sarah Lane | Sep 16, 2004, 12:00 PM

No, this is not an internet pop-up, and not the latest in a series of paper trail scams. It’s just an everyday benefit that comes with your membership at the United States Equestrian Federation—no strings attached! Think it’s too good to be true? Here’s one story that might change your mind.

When Jennifer Corbett and her husband purchased a small farm outside of Boston not long ago, they knew they were making a good move. With added space for the horses to run, this was a chance to build their dreams from the ground up. But Corbett didn’t realize USEF had a program to help build those dreams...right down to the tractor they were going to need to manage the farm.

It’s called the USEF Purchasing Program, and Jennifer says she was flipping through a trusted magazine when she ran across the details—details that saved her $8,000 on a John Deere tractor she couldn’t have afforded otherwise.

“We know they are superior products,” she shares, “but they were slightly out of our range.” Picture Jennifer’s surprise though, when she found out the purchasing program would help her rake in the savings. “Had we not been able to get the discount, we would have had to go two models down,” she explains. “I know they weren’t making money on us because of the discount, but they were very good. All around, we were thrilled with the plan.”

So what is the plan exactly? Here’s the low-down on the big savings: Corporate sponsors like John Deere offer big discounts when USEF members buy their products. Deep discounts. The incredible, now-you-won’t-have-a-hole-in-your-wallet kind of discounts. The offer is available year round—with no strings attached. And the best part? It’s free with your USEF membership. The benefits don’t end there though. The Federation also benefits from your purchase, as part of the proceeds help to support and promote equestrian sport.

“The buying group has been offered to USEF members for just six months and already they have purchased more than $1.5 million in John Deere products alone,” says John Long, Chief Executive Officer of USEF. “That tells me the program is a hit and that there is a lot of potential for growth. Our plan is to bring more partners on board to expand our offering of products and savings. In fact, Lexmark is a new addition to the program, and members can now get excellent discounts on printers and ink products. It’s great to bring such value to our members and to have USEF benefit as well.”

“It’s one of those situations when it was mutually beneficial,” Corbett says of her purchase. Considering she spends about $40 on her yearly USEF membership dues, the payoff seems almost too good to be true. “$40 versus $8,000. You know, very few things in life are so straightforward,” she says excitedly.

But it’s not just newcomers to the horse business who are getting benefits. The discounts are the same across the board, regardless of whether your horse farm has been around for a few months or fifty years.

“I’ve been around a long time,” says Christina Schlusemeyer, of Quiet Hill Farm in Ocala, FL. “We show a lot of horses and I feel like [the USEF's] welfare is important to us, so I feel good about it.” Schlusemeyer doesn’t know how much the farm saved on the latest John Deere purchase, but she knows it was substantial, and already, she’s passing the word along to her friends. So is Jennifer Corbett.

“I’ve got a friend who’s a trainer,” Corbett says. “I know she needs to go shopping for a small tractor…and instead of looking for a used tractor, she’s looking for a new one at John Deere!”
