Littlestown, Pa.
- After accumulating blue ribbons in both the hunter and jumper rings during the first three days of the Blue Rock Classic, Cassie Kahle wasn't going to let Saturday's bad weather stop her winning streak. Despite the constant downpour, the rising talent piloted Wallstreet to victory in the $25,000 Blue Rock Classic Grand Prix.

Kahle managed to navigate the mud to lay down a clear first round over Oscar Soberon's course, securing a spot alongside six other entries to return for the jump-off.

"Wallstreet felt almost a little bit sluggish in the water and the deeper footing, but the footing held up pretty darn good," Kahle commented. "As he picked up on course, his blood picked up. He was definitely a little bit quiet today, so I was trying to rev up some energy. My strategy was to just kind of let him jump easy and clear and then hopefully, save a little bit of power for the jump-off."

Wallstreet is a 12-year-old gelding owned by Emil Spadone and Paul Hendrix. After getting the ride on him last fall, Kahle and the big bay had success at HITS Ocala, adding to the gelding's two-star European track record.

"I got to be the lucky one to ride him," Kahle said. "He is naturally a very quiet horse. He's just been there, done that; he knows his job. I was thinking four [strides] down one of the lines in the jump-off and it didn't quite work out. Luckily, he helped me out a little bit there. I took a chance, and it didn't quite work out, but he kept it up for us. He definitely earned his oats today!"

When Kahle and Wallstreet took the lead, they bumped Morgan Ward and Doutzen from the top spot.

Ward, who personally cut a cast off of her leg to be able to show this week, imported the 8-year-old mare in November. The pair had success in the 1.30m and 1.40m during HITS Ocala and the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).

"I didn't know if Doutzen was going to preform her best today because of the mud," Ward said. "She's really never done the mud since she has been in the states, but she was really good. She is a straightforward horse, she has so much scope and she is so careful. I can just point her at anything in the jump-off, and she will always leave. When I tried her in Europe, we connected right away, so that's really nice to have. The mare knows her job, so it's really nice for me. I can just be looking where I'm going and finding some distances, but other than that, she's such a straightforward horse."

Following in third and fourth was Mary Lisa Leffler on Carlot and Bling Bling, respectively. Fifth place went to Olivia Dorey and Barsa, while Chelsea Babcock and Arona rounded out the top six.

The action at the Blue Rock Classic at Swan Lake Horse Show wraps up on Sunday with the High Child Classic, High Adult Classic and the low and high Junior/Amateur-Owner Classics.

For most riders, waking up to cold and rainy weather is not ideal on a show day. However, Lindsay Mutschler feels differently. The Pennsylvania native and her 12-year-old mount, Fielding, had two great rounds in the $1,000 3'3"/3'6" Amateur-Owner Hunter Classic at the 2016 Blue Rock Classic at Swan Lake.

"This is his type of day," Mutschler said about Fielding. "He loves the mud. So, it worked out to our benefit. He likes the cooler weather, and it helped for the Classic because he was able to hold his stamina a bit longer."

The pair have been competing together for seven years, contending most often in 3'6" Amateur-Owner Hunter division.

"You have to kick and support him, but he's pretty straightforward," Mutschler said. "You just have to keep him straight."

For these two, the Swan Lake show grounds are familiar territory. Living about two hours away makes the trip to Swan Lake convenient for this duo and their family.

"I have shown here before," Mutschler said. "I competed in the Classic last year and I was also here last weekend. I come every year, because it's close to home."

Mutschler and Fielding competed successfully in the 2016 St. Christopher's Horse Show held May 11-15. The duo had four first-place finishes, as well as the second, fourth and sixth, including the Grand Amateur-Owner Hunter Championship in the Haycock Challenge.

"It works out well for me, because it's good prep for Devon. That's why I didn't scratch, because you never know what's going to happen there [Devon]."

The $1,000 Junior Hunter Classic was the first open-card classic class of the day. Pennsylvania natives also took home the blue and red ribbons. Kaitlyn Williams and Little Rock, who train with Dominique Damico at Ramble on Farm earned the victory, while Alexis Ortenzio and Revolution, who train with Jill Shull, clinched the second place.

The hunter ring will be busy on Sunday, May 22, wrapping up multiple hunter divisions with under saddle classes and crowning the last several winners of the 2016 Blue Rock Classic.
