by By Brad Ettleman | Sep 28, 2006, 4:07 PM

Excitement reaches a new high as the reining elite from all around the world make their way to Denver, CO. Organizers expect that up to 30,000 spectators and 500 horses from four continents will take part in the Western International Reining Festival, proud home of the 2006 FEI World Reining Masters Finals and National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Mountain Region Affiliate Finals Championships. The Western International runs October 17-22 at the National Western Complex.

The Western International Reining Festival offers an amazing $250,000 in prize money over six days of competition ranging from Green Rookie all the way up to the World Championship level. In addition to the prestigious FEI World Reining Masters Finals and NRHA Mountain Region Affiliate Championship Finals, Western International also offers the $25,000 Mile-High Derby, $40,000 Stallion Select Futurity and $10,000 Challenger’s Cup Freestyle Reining, as well as a full slate of ancillary classes and a large-scale western trade show.

Denver is well known for its large base of enthusiastic reining fans. During the Western International, three ticketed performances will be presented: Friday, October 20— Cinch Opening Ceremonies, Olympic-style Parade of Nations, $25,000 Mile High Derby Finals and country music recording artist Brice Long; Saturday, October 21—2006 FEI World Reining Masters Finals with a $100,000 purse; and Sunday, October 22—$10,000 Challenger's Cup Invitational Freestyle Reining. Following the momentum of the FEI World Equestrian Games, large crowds are expected for all three performances.

The Western International is produced by the National Western Stock Show in a continuing effort to show the world that the sport of reining is ready to become a full-medal Olympic discipline.
