Local Humane Society Creates Fund to Help Rescued Horses in Sharpsburg Maryland

by By Katherine Cooker, Humane Society of Washington County | Dec 14, 2006, 2:59 AM

At 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday December 5, the warrant served at the property at 4040 Mills Road in Sharpsburg, MD, was completed. The owner is free to return to her property. Of the horses impounded, 22 horses remain on the property at this time. The horses are still under the oversight of the Humane Society of Washington County, MD (HSWC).

The final count was 74 live horses located on the property. In addition, there were five skeletal remains, three carcasses buried in a field, one dead foal and one dead yearling. One horse died in transit to veterinary care. No horses have been euthanized.

Due to the extensive medical needs—now and in the future—and the long-term rehabilitation needs that will be necessary, the HSWC has established the Sharpsburg Horse Rescue Medical and Rehabilitation Fund. Contributions are to be sent to the Humane Society of Washington County, Attention: The Sharpsburg Horse Rescue Medical and Rehabilitation Fund, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Checks should be made out to Humane Society of Washington Count—Sharpsburg Horse Rescue. All funds will be put into that medical and rehabilitation effort.

The results of this investigation are now being compiled. The finished report will be sent to the State’s Attorney’s office as soon as possible. Also, if anyone has information they feel could be pertinent to this investigation, please contact the Humane Society of Washington County.

“We have received tremendous support from the public, both local and nationally,” said Paul Miller, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Washington County. He added, “We are asking the tens of thousands of individuals who have expressed a willingness to help to send us at least one dollar to establish a foundation for the future expenses we are certain to incur for the care of these rescued horses”

For those wishing to contribute items to this rescue effort, the following are needed and can be brought to the offices of the HSWC at 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740: round pen panels, sorting gates, halters, leads, blankets and horse feed tubs of any size.

To donate to Days End Farm Horse Rescue, you may drop items off at the HSWC or you may contact them directly at (301) 854-5037. Items they are in need of are: daily wormer, and regular monthly wormers such as Panacure, Strongid, Ivermectin or ComboCare. They also need breakaway halters, lead ropes, small waterproof blankets, disposable laytex gloves and Betadine solution and Betadine scrub, along with bag pine shavings.
