Lifelong horsewoman Rosey Reed passed away on November 30, 2006, due to complications from cancer. Born in 1954 in San Diego, CA, Reed grew up on a horse ranch and showed Appaloosas. After a stint as a singer and songwriter, Reed started Griffith Park Farms at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. For over 20 years, Reed trained horses and taught riders. Her students won many year-end awards in the Los Angeles area, and in Zone 10.

Reed focused on ponies and young riders, and many of her riders went on to become successful junior riders. In 2006, Reed stood in the winner’s circle at the USEF Pony Finals National Championships for the Green Pony Grand Champion with the small pony, Claim To Fame. The pony, owned by Betsy Born, is also the Zone 10 Green Pony Champion for 2006.

Reed had a passion for writing, and some of her articles were published in the Chronicle of the Horse, Show Circuit, and USEF’s Equestrian magazine. She was also involved in the sport by her participation on various committees and boards. Reed served on the United States Hunter Jumper Association’s Special Projects and Education Committees, and served on the Zone 10 Hunter Committee. She was also a director for the Los Angeles Horse Shows Association and the San Fernando Valley Horse Show Association.

Reed is survived by her daughter, Julia Henry; granddaughter, Jayden Henry; her sister, Leoma Perry; and her fiancé, Steve Winard. The family wishes to create a scholarship in Reed’s name. They plan to create a perpetual trophy in her honor.
