2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Adds Director of External Relations

by By Ellen Gregory | Jan 2, 2007, 4:27 PM

The World Games 2010 Foundation announced that it has added Terry Johnson as its Director of External Relations. Johnson assumes the post after serving for two years as executive director of the Kentucky Sports Authority in Frankfort, KY. Johnson will be responsible for managing all community, organizational and public relations efforts of the Games.

“We are very excited to add Terry to our staff,” stated Jack Kelly, CEO of the World Games Foundation. “There are hundreds of groups and communities that need to be integrated into the Games to maximize its impact on the Commonwealth. Terry has the background and experience to bring them together and to ensure as many Kentuckians as possible can be a part of this landmark event.”

“As awareness of the Games has grown, more and more communities have made inquiries as to how they might be a part of the Games,” Kelly continued. “We needed someone with Terry’s knowledge of the event and of Kentucky to help make this happen.”

In his role with the Sports Authority, Johnson helped create the first-ever statewide organization responsible for improving Kentucky’s economy through the attraction of sports events. Johnson served on the board of directors of the World Games Foundation since the bid was awarded in 2005. He also served as Kentucky’s Deputy Commissioner of Tourism, after spending the prior 12 years working in collegiate sports. He assumed the new role effective January 1, 2007.

“I am very excited to join Jack and the rest of the staff of the Games,” Johnson stated. “The 2010 Games are an opportunity to create long-lasting effects for Kentucky. I am thrilled to be able to help make this happen.”

The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park, are the world championships of the eight equestrian disciplines recognized by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), and are held every four years. The Games have never before been held outside of Europe; nor have all eight disciplines ever previously been held together at a single site—both firsts that will be achieved at the Kentucky Horse Park. The 2010 Games are expected to have an economic impact of $150 million, and it is anticipated that 500,000-600,000 tickets will be sold over the 16-day competition.
