Performance Permits for Non-Characteristic Appaloosas

by By the Appaloosa Horse Club | Jan 11, 2007, 11:38 AM

As of January 1, 2007, the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) began issuing Performance Permits to ApHC-registered, non-characteristic (N) Appaloosas. Permits allow all non-characteristic Appaloosas, regardless of parentage or age, to show in ApHC-approved and sponsored events as well as race with results counting toward ApHC race awards. The permit remains effective for the life of the horse once it is issued, regardless of ownership changes.

Performance Permits eliminate the current Certified Pedigree Option (CPO) program, as well as costly CPO fees and inspections. Appaloosas entered in the current CPO program shall remain eligible to show in ApHC-approved or sponsored events as well as earn ApHC race awards for the life of that horse.

Appaloosas must be parentage verified through DNA analysis by an ApHC-approved laboratory before a Performance Permit is issued. The original certificate of registration, current photographs of the horse, and applicable fees (see fee schedule) must be submitted to the ApHC along with the permit application, which are available through the ApHC and its official website at www.appaloosa.com. An updated certificate of registration will be returned to the horse owner once the permit is issued.

Appaloosas must also be ApHC-registered before applying for Performance Permits. If you own unregistered, non-characteristic Appaloosas, consider taking advantage of the Aged Horse Special to receive reduced registration rates for older Appaloosas. The ApHC began offering members the exclusive opportunity to register eligible Appaloosas for the reduced rate of $150 on October 1, 2006, and will continue to do so until March 31, 2007.

Aged Horse Special Eligibility Requirements for applicant horse:
  • May be eligible for Regular (#) or Non-characteristic (N) classification

  • Must be two years of age or older

  • Must meet all registration requirements

  • Must meet ApHC bloodline requirement: at least one parent must be ApHC-registered with Regular (#) classification; non-Appaloosa parents must be registered with an approved breed association (American Quarter Horse Association, Jockey Club or Arabian Horse Association)

Aged Horse Special applications are available through the ApHC and its official website at www.appaloosa.com.
