As much as we love every facet of equestrian competition, we all know the costs can start to add up—especially when it comes time to take on the world in international competition. That’s why the Active Pony Drivers Committee is making it their mission to raise funds to help support the ponies and drivers going to the 2005 World Pony Driving Championships in Catton Park, England.
“We want to do our part for fund-raising,” says Katie Whaley, who is heading up the project. “We’re really proud that everyone is pulling together in the pony world and this shows a team effort to rally support.”
To raise funds, the Committee is selling polo shirts, vests and bomber jackets. Proceeds from these sales will be donated to the United States Equestrian Team Foundation, to be earmarked for the 2005 Pony Team. The items are offered in navy blue and white, and display a design with a pony collar and driving bit, with the text Pony Team USA underneath.
“We’re sending 18 ponies and it’s basically $10,000 a pony round trip, plus all the incurred expenses once we get to the site. If we can fund at least part of this, it will help our competitors concentrate on their training—it won’t be such a worry on their minds,” says Whaley. “When people place an order for one of these shirts, they can feel like they’re a part of the team. They’re supporting this effort in a very real way.”
