For Immediate Release June 11, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Wednesday, June 13, U.S. Equestrian athlete and Olympian Debbie McDonald will speak to youth from the Hoof Beats 4-H Club in Gladstone, NJ about the Olympic Value of Sportsmanship. Presented in cooperation with the United States Equestrian Federation, McDonald’s talk will intersperse her personal journey with stories of sportsmanship and the importance of living an active lifestyle. The presentation is part of the United States Olympic Committee’s (USOC) 2007 Olympic Education Program, “Real Athletes Are Good Sports.” “Being asked to do this presentation for the USOC is truly an honor,” says McDonald. “This is a subject that is very important and dear to my heart. Sportsmanship is about integrity and character. There is no better feeling than to go into a competition whether you win or lose and know that you gave it your best shot. To walk away with your head up, look your competitor in the eye and shake their hand, you make yourself and your team proud. That is good sportsmanship!” Throughout the year, Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls are speaking to elementary, middle and high school students about their personal stories of representing the United States on the world’s athletic stage. They also show a DVD of Olympic highlights and stories about athletes whose actions espouse the positive aspects of sportsmanship. McDonald will represent the U.S. Equestrian Team and the USOC in reaching out to 4-H Club youth.
