Former editor and owner of The National Horseman Raymond E. Sheffield of Louisville, KY, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY. Sheffield began his career with The National Horseman in 1950, accepting a position as its advertising manager. The owner/publisher at the time, Henry Brown, groomed Sheffield to be his replacement, and when Brown died in 1955, Sheffield became editor and owner. Sheffield was a founding member of the American Saddlebred Pleasure Association and was recognized for his contributions to the breed during his life. He was named United Professional Horsemen Association Man of the Year in 1984, inducted into the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show Hall of Fame in 1995 and recipient of the 2005 American Saddlebred Horse Association Meritorious Service Award. Sheffield was born on August 21, 1922, to George and Clara Louise Sheffield of Louisville, KY. He served four years in the Coast Guard during World War II, earning nine campaign ribbons aboard the U.S.S. Cutter Pulaski in the South Pacific. Sheffield was preceded in death by his wife Ila “Pat” (Black) Sheffield on January 18, 2005. He is survived by his daughter, Tricia McBeath; son, Michael Sheffield; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a nephew. Visitation was Wednesday, June 13, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Pearson-Ratterman Funeral Home in Middletown, KY. Burial followed at Middletown Cemetery.
