Paso Fino Mundial Plays Host to 10 Countries

by By the Paso Fino Horse Association | Oct 11, 2007, 12:45 PM

Ten countries will bring their finest Paso Fino horses to the Jacksonville Equestrian Center on November 7, 2007, for “Mundial” an exciting five-day event. “Mundial” is held every two years in a different country.

This year the Paso Fino Horse Association of Plant City, FL, is the host organization for this event. More than 400 horses are anticipated to compete in 119 classes. Paso Finos are expected from Germany, Aruba, Colombia, Curacao, Panama, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Venezuela and the United States.

The show begins daily at 8:30 a.m. and will continue into the evening hours. According to Dr. Jose Laracuente, Chairman, there will be a lot of vendors and a variety of food, with some specializing in Latin dishes native to the countries in attendance. Before the evening competition begins each night special entertainment has been arranged.

The Paso Fino horse was brought to the Americas on Christopher Columbus’ second voyage. History tells us he put approximately 26 Pasos on the ground in Santo Domingo, which is now the Dominican Republic. Over time they became a very popular horse, and soon spread to many Latin American countries. At the end of World War II, many service men stationed in Puerto Rico and South America brought them back to the States. Today the Paso Fino is becoming popular all over the U.S., and is the second largest breed in Marion County, Florida.

What sets the Paso Fino horse apart from other breeds is their smooth no-bounce four-beat lateral gait. The rider has little or no bounce when riding. To show spectators how smooth the ride, riders often will hold a glass of wine in their hand as they parade around the arena. Another interesting part of a Paso Fino horse show is the use of the fino board, which consists of a wooden walkway in the center of the arena. Spectators come alive when Paso Finos pass over the fino board with resounding standing applause. The echoing rapidity of the hooves hitting the fino board creates an electrifying sound that adds to the class and beauty of this astounding animal.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, and at the door. For more information, contact the Paso Fino Horse Association at (813) 719-7777 or visit www.pfha.com.
