American Saddlebred Registry Sweepstakes Payouts Highest in 15 years; ASR Prize Programs Award Nearly $500,000 in 21 Days

The American Saddlebred Registry Sweepstakes total payout of nearly $200,000 in 2007 tops the 14-year high of $172,822 in 2006 and is the most prize money awarded in one year since the sweepstakes’ all-time high set in 1992. Coupled with its futurities, American Saddlebred Registry prize programs distributed close to half-a-million dollars ($472,087) over the course of approximately three weeks during the Kentucky State Fair (August 19-25) in Louisville and All American Horse Classic (September 4-8) in Indianapolis.

The Three-Year-Old Sweepstakes’ total purse of $116,139 in 2007 is the most since 1993, with first-place winners claiming no less than $11,600 in each of its four classes.

The Four-Year-Old Sweepstakes’ total payout this year is the second highest on record at $49,473 and offered total purses of over $12,000 in each of its four classes.

The Two-Year-Old Sweepstakes’ overall payout first eclipsed the $30,000 mark just two years ago and has now offered in excess of $30,000 for a third consecutive year.

Of the $4 million the ASR Sweepstakes has awarded since 1984, 19% of it—more than a quarter of a million dollars—has been awarded over the last five years.

Between the ASR Futurities and Sweepstakes, owners and nominators collected hefty sums. The top three money winners were Stonecroft Farm with $22,579; Golden Creek Farms, Inc., with $17,707; and William Phelps, III, with $17,510. A total of 16 different entrants each earned five-figure payouts of $10,000 or more while 21 other entrants earned at least $5,000 or more—that’s 37 of 92 (40%) entrants collecting a minimum of $5,000.

The grand total payout for the ASR Amateur, Kentucky and National Three-Year-Old Futurities was a combined $272,663.88—the most in the last seven years. That figure surpasses last year’s total by more than $20,000, representing a nine percent increase—the most significant increase from one year to the next since the turn of the century.
