Judy Guden, the owner of Sagacious HF, ridden by Lauren Sammis to Team Gold and Individual Silver medals at this year's Pan American Games, died Friday night. Guden had been undergoing treatment for breast cancer for many months.
"Judy Guden passed from this world tonight in the loving arms of her friends and family!" family friends Monica Sinks and Ed Borreson reported.
Lauren Sammis was given the ride on the eight-year-old KWPN Sagacious HF—the initials standing for the name of Al and Judy's Hyperion Farm in Wellington, FL—to prepare the gelding for sale. Up to that point, Sagacious had been shown at lower national levels.
Sammis and Sagacious quickly developed a partnership that resulted in the pair finishing second in the selection trials for the Pan American Games squad at Gladstone, NJ in June.
At the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, the major regional championship held every four years, Sammis and Sagacious won Team Gold and Individual Silver.
Sammis dedicated the medals to Guden.
The combination performed an exhibition ride before packed grand stands at Dressage at Devon in September in honor of the Gudens.
