Course Description: This course is designed for horse owners and breeders wishing to obtain a better understanding of most current philosophies of horse breeding and to increase the reproductive efficiency of their horses. The three-day course offers state-of-the-art technology in equine reproductive management. The course includes a two-day and evening session of classroom instruction. Topics to be covered include anatomy and physiology of the mare and stallion genital tract, hormonal relationships and fertility, techniques of artificial insemination, factors affecting sperm production and output, sexual behavior of the stallion, hormonal control of the estrous cycle and pregnancy, care of the pregnant, foaling and post-partum mare, and nutrition of the stallion and pregnant mare. Nutrition of the pregnant mare will be covered by a nutritionist. Friday lectures will include roundtable discussions with Dr. Richard Fayrer-Hosken, to answer questions on problem mares. Lunches will be provided.

Course Description: The aim of the laboratory is to acquaint attendees with the skills and techniques for assisting in day-to-day on-the-farm breeding. In the mare, attendees will be shown how to examine a mare externally and internally. The internal examination will include a manual vaginal examination with instruction on how to inseminate the mare. The laboratory will also include a practical understanding of what uterine cytology means and what you need to know about its interpretation. The aim of this is to provide insight as to what anyone should know before breeding their mare.
