The list of headliners for this year’s Western States Horse Expo, June 6-8, in Sacramento, CA, is bound to please all attendees.
Clinicians include Chris Cox, John Lyons, Jane Savoie, Jonathan Field, Bob Avila, Al Dunning, Richard Shrake, Dana Boyd-Miller, Sandy Collier, Angelia Almos, Bonnie Davis, David Lichman, Scot Hansen, Muffy Seaton, Rallie McAllister, Donna Snyder-Smith, and Charles Wilhelm.
This stellar line-up represents experts in multiple disciplines: starting the young horse, developing riding skills, dressage, reining, cow horse, natural horsemanship, trail riding, gaited horses, equine health, camping with horses, careers in the equine world, hackamore reinsmanship—and much, much more.
Horse Expo is home to the largest display of horse trailers and tow vehicles in the world, as well as over 500 vendors in the all-indoor shopping venues. The spacious grounds are filled with full-size barn displays, fencing, outbuildings, tractors, feeders, stalls, trucks and haulers—you name it! If it’s about horses and the lifestyle that surrounds them, it can be found at the Western States Horse Expo.
A new feature this year is the “Mustang Challenge.” With 90 days to tame mustangs from “wild to mild,” more than 30 trainers from California and surrounding states have gentled 30 Wild Nevada Mustangs and will compete for $7500 at the 2008 Western States Mustang Challenge. The Mustang Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), created the Extreme Mustang Makeover event in order to recognize and highlight the value of Mustangs through a national training competition. By demonstrating the ability of a Mustang to be an athlete and nurturing companion, the Mustang Heritage Foundation is successfully helping the BLM reposition some of the thousands of wild horses available for adoption. At the conclusion of the event, each participating Mustang is available for adoption by competitive bid.
Due to popular demand, a sale of quality Paint and Quarter Horses is returning to the Western States Horse Expo. Dave Hammond Auctions brings innovative energy to the Expo’s horse sale, scheduled for Sunday, June 8 at noon in the Blue Ribbon Barns Arena. “We’re focusing on presenting nice riding horses at this sale—horses that will range from being started with the basics to horses that are truly developed under saddle, so there will be something for everyone, from beginners to experts,” said Dave Hammond. “These sale horses will include trail horses, cow horses, pleasure riding horses, rope horses, and ranch horses. We’ll also have a selection of yearlings and broodmares.
“In order to let buyers know what they’re getting,” continued Hammond, “there will be a thorough preview on Saturday in a special Expo arena set up just for this. Each horse in the sale will be shown loading into a stock trailer, its feet picked up, and then saddled and tacked up—those important tests that demonstrate that the horse has some foundation work. Of course these horses will also be shown under saddle, too. The combination of all these criteria will let potential buyers evaluate what they’re buying.”
This year’s highlights also include the Magnificent 7, a stock horse championship with the dynamic finals of all four events on Friday night. The Saturday Evening Showcase will feature the conclusion of the exciting Mustang Challenge.
