Riders from three nations, Gold- and Silver-medal show jumpers fresh from the Olympics, and the wildly popular Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride—all at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, October 15-18, at the Farm Show Complex. In the world of horses, it doesn't get any more exciting.
Open jumping will be an international affair, with American, Canadian and Irish riders in intense individual competition. U.S. Olympic individual Bronze medalist Beezie Madden and her Team Gold-medal teammates McLain Ward and Laura Kraut never miss the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. All three, along with 2008 Olympic alternate Anne Kursinski, will take on their international rivals in the open jumper classes that highlight the show's evening sessions Tuesday, October 14-Saturday, October 18. Also riding for the trophies and prize money will be Jill Henselwood, a member of the 2008 Silver-medal Canadian Olympic team, Canadian alternate Jonathan Asselin, and Irish riders Jonathan McCrea, Shane Sweetnam and Darragh Kerins.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical never fails to thrill audiences with their 32 perfectly matched black horses, stirring anthems and precise, intricate movements. The musical ride consists of the execution of a variety of complex figures and cavalry drill choreographed to music. Demanding utmost control, timing and coordination, figures are performed in single file, two’s, four’s and eight’s at the trot and canter. Formations include the Dome, the Charge, executed at a gallop with lances drawn, and the March Past, a salute performed to the strains of the force’s Regimental March.
All the international excitement is for a good cause—raising funds for the community through the Harrisburg Kiwanis Youth Foundation and the Pennsylvania National Horse Show Foundation. For online tickets and a complete schedule, visit www.panational.org or call (717) 770-0222.
