The World Games 2010 Foundation announced Blue Grass Airport as the official airport of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.
“Blue Grass Airport will be the gateway for thousands of visitors to experience the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010,” said Michael Gobb, Executive Director. “From almost any destination in the world, passengers can fly into Lexington, KY, with just one stop. We are excited to provide visitors, media and athletes with their first impression of the region.”
Blue Grass Airport, located in Lexington, serves over one million passengers on commercial flights each year. The airport also provides a variety of corporate and general aviation services, including U.S. Customs office for international arrivals, two fixed-base operators and aircraft maintenance and storage.
“We are very pleased to have Blue Grass Airport partner with us,” said Terry Johnson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the World Games 2010 Foundation. “The airport, its board and all involved have already been very supportive and we are very fortunate they share in our vision of what the 2010 Games will mean to this region.”
The airport has already been a promotional site for the 2010 Games, with artwork and information about the Games displayed in its terminal. In addition to the continued use of that space, Blue Grass Airport will carry 2010 Games licensed merchandise in its shops.
As part of the agreement, the 2010 Games staff will work with the airport to promote itself to both private and commercial air travel clients.
In preparation for the Games, Blue Grass Airport is partnering with its airlines, rental car companies and customer service associates to provide certification in the Bluegrass Tourism Ambassador Program. Offered through the Lexington Convention & Visitors Bureau, this certification program provides employees with tourism information, customer service training and ways to enhance the visitor experience.
The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park September 25-October 10, 2010, are the world championships of the eight equestrian disciplines recognized by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), and are held every four years. The Games have never before been held outside of Europe; nor have all eight disciplines ever been held at a single site—both firsts that will be achieved at the Kentucky Horse Park.
The Games will be broadcast on NBC Sports, which has made the largest network commitment to coverage of equestrian sport in U.S. television history. The 2010 Games are expected to have a statewide economic impact of $150 million, and current sponsors include the Rolex Company and an unprecedented $10 million title sponsor, Alltech. It is anticipated that more than 600,000 tickets will be sold for the 16-day competition.
