With wonderful weather and a superb turnout, the second week of the Blenheim Spring Classic series ended Sunday. The $35,000 Blenheim Spring Classic II Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon hosted not only a hill full of spectators but also 25 entrants representing five countries. Showing over a challenging course set by Brazil’s Guilherme Jorge, only one jumped clean. For the ninth time in their partnership, Susan Hutchison and El Dorado 29’s Cantano garnered the grand prix win.

The rest of the riders in the top five places had four faults or fewer. Becky Smith of Canada, and her own Fitzpatrick 2, just missed moving on to a jump-off round by acquiring three time faults in her otherwise clear trip. Finishing in third place was John McConnell, with the fastest of the four fault rounds, aboard Rancho Corazon’s Katie Riddle.

Six of the exhibitors in the class were under the age of 21. One of the afternoon’s youngest entrants, 17-year-old Lucy Davis took fourth place with Old Oak Farm’s Nemo 119. Not new to high-level competition, Davis won the European Youngster Cup in Germany last December by posting the only clean ride in the final round. Stefanie Saperstein, another rising star at 19 years old, placed 10th on El Sueno’s Cantalupi. Saperstein placed consistently during the challenging indoor grand prix season this past year.

This week is the third and final horse show of the Blenheim Spring series at Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park. The must-see events of the week include the $10,000 Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby on Friday, April 16, at 4:00 p.m.* and the $35,000 Blenheim Spring Classic III Grand Prix on Saturday, April 17 at 4:30 p.m.* both on the Blenheim International Field. The two-round Hunter Derby is judged on the horse’s style, quality of movement and handiness over obstacles resembling those in a hunt field.
