Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing Prize Criteria Clarification

by USEF and Rolex, USA | May 4, 2010, 9:04 AM

In 2001, Rolex created the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing. This prize is awarded to any rider who wins the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials and the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in any consecutive order regardless of the calendar year.

Earlier this year it was announced that in 2011 the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials will run on the weekend of April 22 - 25. This is one week prior to the scheduled date for the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, which will take place on April 28 - May 1, 2011. After 2011, the organizers of the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials plan to run the event annually over the weekend of the May Day bank holiday, which will occasionally clash with the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event’s traditional date. The next time this occurs will be in 2016. In order to avoid that conflict, the organizers of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event have agreed to run the competition one week earlier than it otherwise would have run.

Because of this development, the organizers of the three Rolex Grand Slam events wish to clarify how riders in those years will be eligible to claim the Rolex Grand Slam Prize of $350,000. The Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing prize will be awarded to any rider who wins all three events consecutively.

For example:

The winner of the 2010 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials will have to win the 2010 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in order to win the Rolex Grand Slam Prize even though the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials takes place before the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.

The winner of the 2010 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (if different from the winner of the 2010 Badminton Mitsubishi Motors Horse Trials) would have to win the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials and the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in order to win the Rolex Grand Slam Prize.

The winner of the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials (if different from the winner of the 2010 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials) would have to win the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event and the 2011 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in order to claim the Rolex Grand Slam Prize.

The winner of the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event (if different from the winner of the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials) would have to win the 2011 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials in order to win the Rolex Grand Slam Prize.
