Answer: No. The Certification is not meant to be an addition to the C1 Steward’s license. The purpose of the certification is simply to educate the designated individuals assigned to supervise schooling areas as required by JP 103.2.
Q: How will the Certified Schooling Supervisors help the Competition Stewards?
A: Certified Jumper Schooling Supervisors (CJSS) are only supervising the schooling area and therefore, will allow the official competition Stewards the time to perform their other Stewarding duties.
Q: Will a competition be more likely to hire a Steward that is also a CJSS?
A: It doesn’t matter since these are two separate jobs. If a CJSS is required, this will be in addition to the requirement of competition Stewards.
Q: What competitions will be required to have a CJSS on December 1, 2010?
A: Only Jumper Rating 5 competitions and above will be required to have a CJSS and only for their main arena jumper warm up area. A Jumper Rating 5 competition must offer a minimum of $125,000 in jumper prize money.
For 2010, that’s about 60 competitions. Most of those 60 are licensed by the FEI which means an FEI Chief Steward will be in charge of the schooling area at these events.
Q: What is early certification?
A: Early Certification is a process that is taking place through the 2011 competition year (November 30, 2011) where officials can become certified without going through the entire Certification process. For C1 Stewards and Jumper Judges, this means only the Training Session and Final Exam are required.
Q: What are Training Sessions?
A: Training Sessions are free of charge and were included at the conclusion of every Stewards’ and Jumper Judges’ Clinic starting in January of 2010. Training Sessions are a specific block of time at regularly scheduled clinics devoted to schooling supervisor education. They are offered at the conclusion of these clinics to provide the opportunity for individuals not holding one of these licenses to take the Training Session.
Q: Why, if I want my CJSS license in addition to my C1 Steward’s license, do I still have to take the Training Session and Final Exam?
A: C1 Stewards have to take the Training Session and Final Exam because specific training for supervising the warm up area was added to the C1 Stewards’ curriculum in early 2010. They are required to take the Final Exam because the Jumper Committee feels strongly that individuals applying for certification must demonstrate the practical ability to do the job well, not just the ability to read the schooling rules.
Q: Why are FEI Chief Stewards for Jumping exempt from taking the Training Session, Apprenticing, and Final Exam?
A: FEI Chief Stewards for Jumping are exempt from taking the Training Session, Apprenticing, and Final Exam because they have already had the training not previously covered in the Stewards’ and Jumper Judges’ clinics.
Q: Why were so many of the 2010 Training Sessions held in the East?
A: The USEF’s Continuing Education Department sets the schedule for Training Sessions and clinics by using statistical information on where the most officials are located geographically. Clinics and Training Sessions are offered on both coasts.

GR1066 Certified Jumper Schooling Supervisor. Effective 12/1/10:
1. No application will be considered unless and until a minimum of a total of 10 evaluations from current Category I Stewards, Jumper Judges, FEI Stewards for Jumping, FEI Jumping Judges, or Eligible Athletes as defined by USEF, are received.
2. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, must be Senior Active Members of USEF, and must also demonstrate experience in the Jumper Division within the past three years.
3. Applicants must complete the Certified Jumper Schooling Supervisor Training Program of the USEF Jumper Committee approved by the USEF Licensed Officials Committee prior to submitting their application. Information on the application procedure and the Training Program (which consists of a training session and apprenticeships) is available on the USEF website www.usef.org and also from the USEF Office.
4. Maintenance of Status - To maintain Certification, Schooling Supervisors must officiate at a minimum of four competitions and attend a Training Session every four years.
5. Early Certification Process
a. Category 1 Stewards and USEF Jumper Judges (both “r” and “R”) who complete a Training Session by November 30, 2011 may apply to be a Certified Jumper Schooling Supervisor before December 1, 2011. Apprenticeships are not required.
b. Other individuals meeting the minimum criteria who complete the Training Program before November 30, 2011 may also apply to be a Certified Jumper Schooling Supervisor before December 1, 2011.
c. Exception: FEI Chief Stewards for Jumping are automatically licensed as Certified Jumper Schooling Supervisors.
