Endurance

Over the last week the USEF hosted three Regional Selection Trials for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, paring down the number of eligible horse/rider combinations for the US Endurance Team from 62 to 47.

The Central Selection Trial was held in Danville, IL on June 19. Athletes and horses faced hot, humid and muddy conditions, turning a fast course into true test of endurance. At the East Selection Trial held in Fair Hill, MD on June 22 there was a repeat of the heat and humidity which plagued the Central Selection Trial, but no mud to contend with. The third selection trial took place in Prineville, OR on June 26, the conditions were perfect and the course was fast.

The horses and riders who attended one of these trials will be eligible to attend the Observation Trial August 8-11, in Danville, IL. Following the Observation Trial, the top ten horse/rider combinations will be named to the nominated entries, from which the final five horse/rider combinations will be selected to represent the US on the Endurance Team in September at the World Games.

Veteran Rebecca Hart won the Short Course and outdid herself this year, winning the National Championship title on Kazan, and National Reserve Champion on Norteassa. Robin Brueckmann finished third overall dominating all three tests of the Long Course format competition aboard Raison D'Etre.

Reining

In the Adequan Arena at the 2010 NRHA Derby the USEF National Youth Reining champions were crowned in very competitive fashion on Saturday. In the 19-21 year old division, Chloe Gray was happy just to be able to compete after her horse injured a suspensory ligament the day before the competition. Luckily her trainer's wife, Shannon Rafascz stepped in with a horse for her to ride and Repeat Fine Footwork delivered big time. Gray rode confidently despite having sat on Repeat Fine Footwork for the first time the previous evening. She won with a score of 144.5 over Lydsey Jordan on Sailin CD and Breanne Bertrand on Stoned Chik, who tied for the reserve spot on 142.5.

Layla Choate was named USEF National Youth Reining Champion in the 14-18 year old division after a great performance on Plus One Chex, scoring a 144.5. Choate won by a narrow margin over Devin Spencer who scored a 144.

Kyndall Harper is in her last year of the 13 and under division and made the most of it, winning stylishly and convincingly aboard Please Me Whiz. Harper's score of 141 put her well clear of the 2010 Reserve Champion, Stephen Timberlake, who scored a 136.5 aboard Whiz Bang Boom.

In the CRI-Y which ran concurrently, eight riders had their eyes on the 2010 Smart Pak North American Young Rider Reining Championships at the Adequan FEI North American Junior/Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North. Breanne Bertrand and Stone Chik led the way: their score of 142.5 gave them top honors in the FEI division over Will Letner and A Genuine Diamond and Caroline Blackshear and Kidsgotitall. This group of riders will represent the United States July 28-Aug 1, 2010 in Lexington, KY.

Vaulting

Several US vaulters have been spending time training in Europe in preparation for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. This weekend at the CVI2* Krumke in Germany Megan Benjamin put in beautiful performances to win in the Individual Female CVI2* with a score of 8.152. Alicen Divita finished fifth and Shannyn Poer was seventh.
