Gregory Stritzel and his horse Balabooga Brawley took the top prize in the Open Intermediate division at the three-day event held at the Horse Park at Woodside Horse at Woodside over Memorial Day weekend. Open Intermediate was the highest-level section held at the May 27-29 event, the Horse Park's first United States Eventing Association (USEA)-recognized event in nearly three years.
All levels of eventing except Advanced–-including Beginner Novice, Novice, Training, Preliminary and Intermediate--were represented by a sold-out competitor slate of 350 entrants who rode in dressage, cross-country and stadium jumping classes.
Holly Nash, incoming President of the Horse Park's Board of Governors, said, "Now that the hugely successful Memorial Day event is behind us, the Horse Park is officially back as a major eventing venue in Northern California. Local riders and spectators alike have long awaited the return of USEA-rated eventing to the Bay Area. With the Park's new cross-country jumping course, the county's recent granting of use permits, and Stanford University's extension of our lease through 2017, that return is now assured."
The Park's next three-day event, to be held August 12-14, will host the Area VI Intermediate Championships and a USEA Gold Cup award, one of only nine in the country. An October 7-9 event will feature a special Preliminary-level competition. The Horse Park will begin hosting Advanced-level events by 2006.
Robert Kellerhouse, a renowned organizer of world-class three-day events, has been instrumental in directing the construction of the Horse Park's cross-country course with new tracks and jumps. Derek Di Grazia has been retained as course designer.
