Under sunny skies, the first day of the USEF Junior Hunter National Championship – East Coast competition began with a challenging Handy Hunter round at the Kentucky Horse Park. Course designer Bobby Murphy made use of the bank of the Walnut Ring for a trot jump.

The trot off the bank proved to be a walk in the park for Dr. Betsee Parker's Way Cool piloted by Victoria Colvin. The pair scored an impressive 267 in the Younger Large Juniors for the day's high handy score which combined with the bay gelding's Under Saddle Score of 246 puts them into the lead for their section.

Also leading in high handy scores were Scout (owned by Mattie Worsham and ridden by Shawn Casady) with a 262 for the win in the Younger Small Juniors; Poetic (owned and ridden by Maggie Boylan) with a 255 in the Older Large Juniors; and Red Panda (the chestnut gelding owned by John and Sarah Ingram and guided by Hayley Barnhill) capturing the Small Olders with a 266.

Also of note today were impressive Under Saddle scores by Rumba (owned by Dogwood Hill, LLC, and ridden by Destry Spielberg). The Large Junior grey gelding impressed the judges with a 268. Equaling that score in the Small Juniors was Scott Stewart's entry, Ovation, also piloted by Victoria Colvin.

With the Handy Round counting 40% and the Under Saddle counting 20%, the overall section leaders going into Wednesday are as follows: the Large Younger Juniors are being led with a 390 by Way Cool and Victoria Colvin; Poetic and Maggy Boylan with the win in both the Handy and the Under Saddle for the Large Older Juniors are currently in the lead, also with a combined score of 390; Red Panda and Hayley Barnhill can boast the same for the Small Olders with a score of 398.5; and Shawn Casady's ride, Scout, is paving the way for the Small Youngers with a score of 384. But, with the Classic round counting 40% of the overall score still up for grabs, the competition to be the National Junior Hunter Champion for the East Coast is nowhere close to the finish.
