Buffalo, NY - August 31, 2010 - SBS Farm's talented chestnut gelding Jersey Boy and rider Jennifer Alfano defended their title at the second annual $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby (Chicago Hunter Derby) Presented by CN on Saturday, August 29, at Annali Farm in Antioch, IL. Winning the class for the second year in a row, Jersey Boy and Alfano finished second in the first round of competition with a score of 182, and then moved into first place following an excellent handy round with a score of 215. The pair's two round total of 397 was enough to finish at the top of the class for another exciting victory for this successful combination.

Derby judges included Bill Moroney, Jimmy Torano, Danny Robertshaw, and Julie Winkel. Torano also served as co-course designer with Bobby Murphy.

Following the derby, Julie Winkel commented on the event and Jersey Boy's impressive victory, stating, "The derby was a fantastic production. Everything that went into it, all of the tents, the luncheon and all of the activity was top notch. The course was beautiful, it was challenging, and we had a nice field of horses with 28 in the class."

"Jersey Boy really rose to the top showing his brilliance, not only in the handy, but with his scope and his ability to jump up and across the field easily," Winkel noted. "He is certainly the type of horse that you would want to ride and that would be fun to do this event on. Also, we love his attitude. He is always looking for the next jump and he is happy with his job. You can tell that he really enjoyed doing it as much as we enjoyed watching him."

Judge Danny Robertshaw also had great things to say about Alfano and Jersey Boy, stating, "One of the things that I enjoy most about watching Jen and Jersey Boy compete is that when she first enters the ring, Jen picks up a nice gallop and she keeps that going throughout the entire course. She gallops up to the fence and then lands and gallops away from the fence and she does not slow down like so many others do, she keeps it going."

"Jersey Boy is a wonderful horse. I have watched that pair from the beginning and I have seen them do many derby classes and he has become so polished," Robertshaw added. "He spends more time in the air than most of the horses and he is always beautifully posed. It is fun to watch those two because they are a part of each other. There is such a oneness between horse and rider and there is such a beautiful, united effort between the two of them all of the time."

Alfano and Jersey Boy have topped the USHJA International Hunter Derby standings since the inception of the series. Last week the pair competed for the $100,000 2009-2010 The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals Presented by Dietrich Insurance and earned the 12th place award overall. They have won numerous hunter derby titles all over the country and are proud to add a second win in Chicago to that list.

"Jersey Boy has been wonderful," noted Alfano. "He really enjoyed the course. After being in Kentucky last week he is feeling great. He does not tire easily and he loves to do this. I feel that he really thrives on these classes."

Alfano added, "I loved the course! It is always beautiful here and we come a long way to show in this class. How could you not? I thought the class was great and Jersey Boy really loved it. I love what they do for the derby here; it is nice to have such a beautiful field to ride in and everything was just amazing."

Alfano also had an exciting day riding a new horse named Nicolette in the Chicago class. The pair came into the second round in the 12th position and earned a top score placing them in 4th overall. This was the first time that Alfano had ever shown the mare, and she had never even jumped a line on her until that day's class. Alfano noted that Nicolette felt a little unsure going into the first round, but she went for it and made an exciting move up in the handy round.

Robertshaw commented on Alfano's new partnership with Nicolette, saying, "I know that they just got that horse and it looks like she will end up being a great horse for Jen as well. She already accepts Jen's ride so readily even though she is much greener, so it will be fun to see how that turns out."

SBS Farms, Inc. and Alfano will now make their trip home to Buffalo, NY, where the horses will have a short break. Alfano and Jersey Boy's next stop will be the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™Hunter Derby Demonstration in Lexington, KY. Alfano received one of only two initial bys to participate in the monumental WEG demonstration that will be spotlighting show hunters on a world stage for the very first time.
