Lake Placid, NY — Margie Engle of Wellington, FL, rode Indigo to victory in the $30,000 Intercat, Inc. Open Jumper Classic to highlight Friday’s competition at the 42nd annual Intercat, Inc. Lake Placid Horse Show.

Engle, a 2000 Sydney Olympic veteran who has been a Grand Prix champion in Lake Placid a record seven times, was one of 11 entries from the starting field of 43 to qualify for the timed jump-off by riding without penalty over the 15-jump, first round course at the North Elba Showgrounds. She was the 10th to return for the eight-jump tiebreaker course and she moved into the lead by finishing fault-free in 34.720 seconds, more than a full second ahead of Kate Levy of Wellington, FL, who had held the lead with a clean ride in 35.959 seconds on Lirving de Volsin.

The final entry was Charlie Jacobs of Weston, MA, on Secret Love, the horse on whom he won the horse show’s $75,000 Woodlea Farms I Love New York Grand Prix in 2009. Jacobs blazed over the course and beat Engle’s time, finishing in 33.269 seconds. However, he had a rail down at the final fence for four faults, giving Engle the win and leaving him in seventh place.

“I never count on a win until the class is over,” Engle said. “I thought Charlie rode great but he just had a little bad luck at the last fence.

“This is Indigo’s first class in five weeks,” she added. “We were giving him a break after competing in Europe. We’ll have him go again Sunday in the Mirror Lake Inn Grand Prix and then it will be back to Europe. He was really great for me today.”

Other winners on Friday included two riders from Ireland—Jonathan McCrea on Tommy Bahama in the Adirondack Flying Service 1.35m Speed Class and Darragh Kenny on Castello in the J.Lohr Vineyards & Wines 1.40m Open Speed Stake.
