Scott Stewart Wins $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby

by Marty Bauman/Classic Communications | Jul 11, 2011, 8:19 AM

Lake Placid, NY— Scott Stewart of Wellington, FL, dominated the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by Eastern Hay and Purina Mills, for the second straight year at the 34th annual Intercat, Inc. I Love New York Horse Show.

Stewart finished with the top score in both rounds on Carlos-Boy, owned by Krista and Alexa Weisman of Sherborn, MA, to win with an overall score of 381.500 points. Kim McCormack of Simpsonville, SC, was second on her 16.2h, chestnut, gelding, Sundance, with 367.000. Stewart completed the top four, coming in third with a score of 365.750 on Dedication, owned by Fashion Farm, and fourth on Empire, owned by Becky Gochman, with 365.000.

The Richard Jeffery designed course featured a Winter Olympics theme as a tribute to the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games held in Lake Placid. The course featured real snow brought in from the Olympic Ice Arena to help create simulated bobsled, hockey, skiing and other winter sport scenes set among traditional hunt fences in the Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix Field.

The course included several options for bonus points. Stewart took advantage of the options receiving 21 bonus points on the Handy Hunter course.

“It was a really nice course,” said Stewart, who swept the top two places last year when the Derby debuted at Lake Placid. “It rode well and the Handy featured lots of options; you could make it as hard or as simple as you wanted.

“I took the trickier options with him,” Stewart said of Carlos-Boy, a 16-year-old, 16.3h, grey gelding. “He is more experienced, so I was able to take advantage of the more difficult route and they rewarded me for it.”

Stewart said that the Derby was the perfect finish to two wonderful weeks in Lake Placid. “This is always one of our favorite shows of the year,” he said. “We look forward to coming to Lake Placid all year long. It’s such a fabulous town and such a fabulous show.”

Other winners on the final day of the Intercat, Inc. I Love New York Horse Show included Gabrielle Stern on Levantino L in the Y 106.3 Low Amateur Owner Jumper Classic; Molly Braswell on Royal Discovery in The Levy Family Low Junior Jumper Classic; Hannah Murrin on Valentina in the EquiFit WIHS Adult Jumper Classic (18-40); Lucy Mitchell-Inness on Prego in the EquiFit WIHS Adult Jumper Classic (over 40); Katherine Strauss on Fardella in the Paradysz Farm WIHS Children’s Jumper Classic (14 and under); and Jordan Irvan on Veredus Lady in the Paradysz Farm WIHS Children’s Jumper Classic (15-17).
