Memorable Moments

There are few things in life I get more excited about than cheering on Team USA, and not just in equestrian events. I can get behind any sport if there’s a USA title or medal on the line; I even watched soccer this year. The Olympics consume my life every two years, I rarely come out from behind a television or computer screen and end up feeling void and lost when they’re over. Needless to say, WEG has been quite the adrenaline rush for me.

If you have never seen a US Team win a medal you need to update your bucket list. Until Sunday when I witnessed the US Reining Team win the Gold medal I didn’t think anything could top seeing my Florida Gators win the National Championship (cough*Championships). But being there with all of the Team USA support crew waving our flags and cheering like crazy as the Gold medals were awarded to our riders made me proud to be American. And let me just tell you, no one parties like the Reiners party… few people remained dry after the champagne spraying..err toast... that occurred at the reception in the International Supporters Pavilion.

Having said all that, the most memorable moment thus far happened yesterday when Steffen Peters and Ravel finally got the medal they have deserved for so long. After Steffen jumped to the top of the leader board with three riders left to go I was too stressed to watch and went down to wait with the team in the warm-up, I also hadn’t really taken in much oxygen during his test. As we watched the scores come in for the Spanish rider the mood got increasingly more excited as we all realized that Steffen and Ravel would be getting the Bronze medal. My favorite quote of the Games so far was from Steffen when he walked up to Anne Gribbons and said with a huge smile “Well boss, looks like we got a medal.”

With the Individual Reining Competition set to begin in less than an hour I’m rooting for a Team USA sweep of the medals!!

Side note: If anyone knows the hilarious Aussie boys (Hamish and Dave) that are here to report on the Games, please inform them that I would like to make a guest appearance on their video blog (http://www.youtube.com/user/EquestrianAUS). I am shameless, I know this. (Shout out to http://www.eventingnation.com for turning me on to them).
