North Salem, NY - Molly Ashe-Cawley, Wellington, FL, and Carissimo added another victory to their record as they bested a field of 45 top horse-and-rider combinations to win the $25,000 North Salem Grand Prix at the Old Salem Spring Horse Shows, held on the beautiful grounds of Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY.
The course, designed by Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela, took advantage of the rolling slopes of the Grand Prix field at Old Salem Farm. With a two stride combination set going up the hill away from the ingate, a large oxer going downhill towards the pond and an imposing ASPCA wall, the course was challenging.
Ashe-Cawley and Carissimo, a 12 year-old, bay, Holsteiner gelding by Calando I owned by Maarten Huygens, completed the first-round course and the jump-off fault free, stopping the timers in the jump-off in 41.786 seconds for the win. Second went to McLain Ward, Brewster, NY, and the stunning Vocas, Louisburg Farm’s white tailed chestnut, who were double clear in a time of 42.514 seconds. Jimmy Torano, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and his Walk About were third with two clear rounds that showcased this horse’s amazing jumping talent. Their time, 43.138 seconds, would have been closer to the leaders if the big bay had not jumped so high over every obstacle. Dana and rider Candice King, Wellington, FL, gave Louisburg Farm its second horse at the top of the leaderboard, as they placed fourth with fault-free efforts over the fences in a time of 45.049 seconds.
Katie Dinan and Nougat Du Vallet, last week’s winner of the Welcome Stake ran out of luck this week, as they parted company on course and Nougat Du Vallet lost his bridle. He took two laps around the course before he was finally caught and returned to his rider.
