SEC Teams Close Out Their Seasons, Kansas State and OSU Both Win

by Andrew Minnick | Mar 11, 2013, 2:23 PM

Auburn finished up last weekend, and now all four SEC equestrian teams are through with regular season competition. Oklahoma State & Kansas State both picked up wins against South Carolina, setting up a season ending clash in Manhattan on Saturday. My quick recap of the weekend's NCEA action is below.

No.8 Kansas State University def. No.4 South Carolina University

Kansas State needed a win. After climbing to No.4 in the rankings, they had lost three straight, including a couple of ugly losses to Baylor and TCU last weekend. On Friday, they found the form that had served them so well during the fall and soundly beat the Gamecocks.

K-State was clearly the stronger Western team. Their reiners began their day by winning 4-1 and the Horsemanship team followed suit with a 4-1 win of their own. The Hunter Seat match was closer, but the Wildcats still managed at 6-4 win, and a convincing victory overall.

"Our conversation all week was that they should be a little angry about last Saturday and they proved themselves today," Kansas State Head Coach Casie Maxwell told www.kstatesports.com. "This is the team that we have been training with all year and I am very proud of them."

The Wildcats finish up their season on Saturday at home against Oklahoma State.

Final Score 14-6

No.2 University of Georgia def. No.6 Texas A&M University

The Georgia Bulldogs ended their season with a win over conference foe Texas A&M on Friday. It was senior day at home for the Aggies, but the Bulldogs didn’t take it easy. Georgia won all four phases of competition and their Hunter Seat team was dominant.

Equitation on the Flat wen to Georgia 4-1, Equitation over Fences 5-1, Horsemanship 3-2, and Reining 4-2. For the Bulldogs it was, “a wonderful day,” according to head coach Meghan Boening, “We are grateful for this win and are excited about where we are heading.”

It wasn’t the greatest way for the Aggies to end the season, but they’ve been performing a little better as of late. Heading into the SEC championships a couple of weeks from now they’re certainly underdogs, but capable of a big win.

Final Score: 16-6

Reining: Shelby St. Hilaire (TAMU)

No.3 Oklahoma State University def. No.4 South Carolina University

South Carolina fought hard to end the season on a good note, but fell just short dropping a raw score tiebreaker to the Cowgirls 1461.5-1393.

The Gamecocks were on top 9-6 heading into Reining, the final phase of the meet, but the Cowgirls rallied to a 4-1 win and tied the score. The final decision was decided by less than 100 points between two teams that were evenly matched, but clearly had their strengths. South Carolina’s Hunter Seat team was dominant, winning 7-3, but Oklahoma State’s Western team was equally impressive in their 7-3 win.

The Cowgirls have one match left in their regular season, Saturday at Kansas State. If they manage to win it, they’ll finish the season with 10 wins. With this loss South Carolina ends their streaky season 6-6. They’ll be in action again on March 29th in the first round of the SEC championship.

Final Score: 10-10 (1461.5-1393)

The TCU Horned Frogs ended their season with two dominating wins. On Saturday afternoon they defeated Delaware State 17-2 and on Sunday they defeated Sacred Heart 13-2. With those two wins the horned frogs take an 8-5 record into the postseason. Their postseason begins in Stillwater, OK at the Big 12 Championships on March 29th.
