The NCEA regular season is almost over. There’s not a lot going on this weekend, but the one major conference matchup is a good one.
No.3 Oklahoma State University vs. No.8 Kansas State University
This marquee matchup of Big 12 rivals is a fitting way to close out the conference’s season, and get a glimpse of what’s to come in the Big 12 championship and the NCEA Championship. Oklahoma State is the higher ranked team, and the favorite here, and a win for the Cowgirls would give them an impressive 10-4 record (4-2 in the Big 12).
Kansas State is a hard team to read though. They were dominant for most of the fall season, but lost their last faceoff with the Cowgirls 7-15, and had a string of three straight losses this spring. Two of those were ugly defeats to Big 12 teams Baylor and TCU. And, as if to make sure no one knows what exactly to think of them, the Wildcats came out strong last weekend against former No.1 South Carolina and won 14-6.
It’ll be senior day in Manhattan, so the Wildcats have something extra to ride for on Saturday. “We are looking forward to being at home and competing in our last regular season meet,” said Kansas State head coach Casie Maxwell. “OSU will be a tough opponent and we look to capitalize on what we did well this past weekend against South Carolina and finish the regular season on a high note.”
Kansas State is certainly talented enough to beat OSU, and the Cowgirls barely defeated that same South Carolina team that they soundly beat, via raw score tiebreaker last weekend. Close calls are nothing new for the Cowgirls though, and chances are that their stellar western team (12-1 this season) will keep them in this one. If the Wildcats are on their game however, OSU might need a better than average performance from their Hunter Seat team to win outright.
History favors the Cowgirls in this one, circumstance gives the Wildcats the edge. Expect a close one in Manhattan, KS on Saturday.
