Shining Spark Becomes NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire

by By Carol Trimmer | Dec 13, 2005, 9:41 AM

Carol Rose's Shining Spark was bred to be a spectacular show horse--and he was. He was bred to be a fabulous sire--and he is. Shining Spark is a 1989 son of Genuine Doc and out of Rose's 1979 American Quarter Horse Association's (AQHA) Superhorse and 1996 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame inductee Diamonds Sparkle. In 2002, Shining Spark was the youngest stallion to reach one of the NRHA's most prestigious milestones and was named an NRHA Million Dollar Sire. Just three short years later, Shining Spark is once again in the spotlight. His sons and daughters have earned him yet another accolade. Shining Spark is NRHA's newest Two Million Dollar Sire.

Bob Loomis began Shining Spark's NRHA show career by placing sixth in the 1992 NRHA Futurity. In 1993, they were reserve champions at the Reno (Nevada) Spectacular and tied with NRHA Futurity Champion Boomernic for reserve champion honors at the Lazy E Classic in Guthrie, OK. With Tim McQuay at the helm, Shining Spark won the 1993 AQHA World Champion title in Junior Reining and went on to win the 1994 NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City. At that point, Shining Spark was retired from the show ring and began making history as a sire.

The 16-year-old stallion has 405 offspring with 233 NRHA money earners. Their average earnings are $5,113.92. His top nine money earnings offspring have more than their sire in common. Each has earned well over $50,000 in NRHA competition. Shining Spark's top nine money earners include: Sailing Spark ($94,282.23), Jacs Electric Spark ($85,906.71), Princess In Diamonds ($76,976.37), Shiners Lena Doc ($60,100.84), Shining Salute ($59,600.50), Just Gotta Shine ($55,766.52), Alot A Spark ($55,410.01), A Sparkling Vintage ($53,798.33) and Shine By The Bay ($53,051.68).

Carol Rose is AQHA's All Time Leading Breeder of Performance Horses. In 2004, Shining Spark was the AQHA #2 Leading Sire of Performance Registers of Merit. His foals have amassed more than 22,000 AQHA points and 29 world and reserve world championship titles. According to Equistat, Shining Spark is also the only horse whose offspring have earned more than one million dollars in National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) competition.
