Lexington, Ky. – The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to announce that Charles Owen is now the Official Helmet Supplier of US Equestrian, as well as a Safety Education Partner and Learning Center Content Partner through 2020.

Established in 1911, Charles Owen manufactures all its headgear in its award-winning factory in North Wales, using only components that meet its own high standards. Charles Owen has put years of research and development into its helmets and body protectors to ensure that equestrian athletes have access to the very best. By investigating real accident situations and being involved in cutting-edge research, Charles Owen is able to stay on top of the latest technology and bring high-quality, safe helmets to athletes.

"We are excited to introduce Charles Owen as the Official Helmet Supplier of US Equestrian, as well as a Safety Education Partner and Learning Center Content Partner," said USEF CEO Bill Moroney. "With US Equestrian’s continued focus on concussion safety, Charles Owen is a perfect fit for partnership and we look forward to its continued support of our athletes."

A Charles Owen helmet is comprised of a hard outer shell with a protective liner made of high-grade polystyrene, a material that can be considered microscopic bubble wrap. Upon impact, layers of these bubbles burst, increasing the length of time it takes for the head to stop and therefore reducing the chance of injury to the brain. Helmets should be replaced after a blow to the head, especially if the wearer loses consciousness. The expected life span of a helmet for an average rider is five years. Fitting is extremely important to ensure maximum safety and each model of helmet does fit differently. The helmet should be a snug fit when new, as it will mold to the shape of the athlete’s head as it is worn, and a helmet should never rock backwards or forwards excessively.

“Charles Owen is proud to partner with US Equestrian to share the safety information and technology that we’ve developed with riders of all disciplines,” said Managing Director Roy Burek. “We are excited to be connected with US Equestrian as it embarks on its new strategic plan.”
