Each year at the Adequan®/FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC), some special horses and riders from across the disciplines are recognized for going above and beyond.
This year’s HorsePower Trophy was award to Emma Szegvari’s Ringmoylan, a 21-year-old Irish Sport Horse that Szegvari competed in the Young Rider dressage division with the Region 8 team. Started in 2011, the HorsePower Trophy is given to the horse that stands out from their peers at the NAYC. This award recognizes an outstanding horse, from any of the championship disciplines, who best demonstrates determination, courage, class, heart and the ability to inspire athletes and spectators alike throughout the competition.
In his varied career, Ringmoylan has competed at the upper levels of eventing as well as in FEI-level dressage. Szegvari, 19, has successfully competed him through Intermediaire I and takes care of him on her own at home in Carlisle, Mass. Ringmoylan has given opportunities to many different riders and is a barn favorite with his recognizable coloring and curious personality. Multiple chefs d’equipe nominated “Ringo” for the HorsePower Trophy.
Jorja Rose Jones accepted the Captain Andrew B. de Szinay Memorial Sportsman Trophy for the hard work, team spirit, and dedication she showed as she competed with the Zone 4 team in the USHJA North American Junior Show Jumping Team Championship.
Each year at NAYC, the Captain Andrew B. de Szinay Memorial Sportsman Trophy is given to the athlete across all disciplines who best personifies the high standards and virtues of integrity, sportsmanship, honor, courage, team spirit, good temper and unselfishness. This award is presented annually by the U.S. Equestrian Federation in honor of Captain Andrew B. de Szinay who was a teacher, dressage judge, technical delegate and long-time supporter of the Young Rider’s program. His dedication and support has helped the championships become what it is today.
Jones, of Byhalia, Miss., began riding Light Show when he was 7 and she was 14 years old. Diane Masters, her trainer, recognized Jones’ commitment and purchased him for her. Jones has worked over the years to train him, all while taking full care of him. This week at NAYC in addition to riding and taking care of Light Show, Jones was an enthusiastic team member and a wonderful example.
The Howard B. Simpson High Five Trophy is awarded annually to the volunteer who best exemplifies Howard's spirit of volunteering. The award honors Howard B. Simpson who served as the NAYC Director at Tempel Farms for many years. Simpson also served as sponsor and tireless volunteer. The recipient of this award, which is presented by the U.S. Equestrian Federation, embodies Howard's dedication and commitment to the championships.
This year’s Howard B. Simpson High Five Trophy winner is Katelyn Mosle from Region 8. Although Mosle, 18, was supposed to compete in the U.S. Dressage Federation North American Junior Rider Dressage Championship, she encountered problems with transportation for her horse and so wasn’t able to ride at the last minute. Undaunted, she traveled to New York with her team to cheer them on and was an extremely supportive team member.
In addition to supporting the Region 8 riders, Mosle, from Manchester, N.H., also volunteered as a scribe for the show.
